FAQS /

Our historic services can be integrated with our full design and construction offerings. We begin by auditing your property to determine whether it is listed, or eligible to be listed, on national, state, or local historic registries. If your property qualifies, we will facilitate the eligibility submission directly with your municipality’s Historic Preservation Committee.

    1. Based on their determination and your goals for the property, we design in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties to ensure all updates are compatible with the home’s historic character.

The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties

Historic preservation in architecture involves maintaining, restoring, and adapting existing structures while honoring their original design, materials, and craftsmanship. This process can include preservation, restoration, or renovation depending on the home’s condition and the owner’s goals.

  1. When a property is listed on a historic registry, any renovation must be approached with sensitivity and follow the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. We often collaborate with local Historic Preservation Committees to ensure all design modifications are compatible with the building’s original character.
  2. Once a property is listed, it is very difficult to remove it from the registry. Delisting typically requires legal processes involving title and other entities, which are outside the scope of our services.

The approach to treatment determines the balance between restoration and replacement. Our primary goal is to honor the home’s history while aligning it with your functional and lifestyle needs.

    1. We start by evaluating the structure to determine if any additions or modifications are required to ensure stability for the next century. We also assess the home’s envelope, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to identify upgrades that can improve energy efficiency and accommodate new layouts.
    2. Understanding the architectural period, style, and original materials of the home allows us to make thoughtful design decisions that complement its character while enhancing comfort and longevity.
