The Mid-Century Ranch

This whole-home renovation focused on reimagining the main floor of a mid-century ranch to better serve the way a modern family actually lives. The existing layout kept key public spaces — the kitchen, dining room, living room, and foyer — siloed from one another, working against the open, connected flow the clients craved. The scope of work brought all of these areas into a single cohesive open plan, while also carving out a functional mudroom that integrates seamlessly into the space. Finishes were addressed throughout, and on the exterior, a fresh coat of paint, new front door, and updated lighting refreshed the home’s curb appeal. A large patio and pergola built off the back of the home extended the living space outdoors and gave the family a true gathering destination.

Though the home is rooted in mid-century architecture, the design intentionally sidesteps the expected direction. Rather than leaning into retro or period-specific references, the goal was something more timeless — a space that feels contemporary and grounded without being cold or trend-driven. The team drew inspiration from hygge and Scandinavian design principles, using those frameworks to build an environment centered on calm, order, and understated warmth.

The palette and material selections skew neutral and fairly restrained, and the result reads as comfortably masculine in its composition. What gives the space its personality and dimension is the homeowner herself — Margarette’s natural inclination toward whimsy and eclectic styling layers in through her personal objects and collected pieces, softening the structure of the design and making the space unmistakably hers.
