How to Save Energy (& Money) with Energy-Efficient Design Tips

February 22, 2023

Energy conservation is a hot topic this year. With energy prices skyrocketing, we are all looking
at different ways to save energy and money. Making cuts starts with reducing your
electricity and water usage but it certainly doesn’t stop there! In order to reduce your bills and be
more environmentally conscious, you also need to look into making your home more energy
efficient.
Here is how interior design can help.

#1 - Install Fans & Stock Up on Cute Cozy Blankets

Did you know that heating and air conditioning systems use the most electricity in your home?

Installing ceiling fans is a great way to reduce the need for air conditioning during warmer months. And ceiling fans tend to be more effective than standing ones.

For winter months, lowering your thermostat to just even 1 or 2 degrees will make a difference over time! Counterbalance by adding a couple more cute cozy blankets around the house and you will only notice the difference on your bill!

#2 - Choose Lighter Colors for Your Walls

Light colors for your walls will reflect heat better, keeping your home cooler during the hot summer months. It will also bring more light in, a great benefit for those dark short winter days!

# 3 - Upgrade the Lighting Throughout Your Home

Of course, turning off the lights in rooms you don’t use is a must. But there are a few additional things you can do as well.

Start by switching your incandescent with LED bulbs that are more energy-efficient. This home update alone can save energy significantly.

Then add task lighting in certain spots that need to be a bit brighter such as by your desk in your home office or next to the chair where you like to read. It will allow you to light up just a smaller part of the room.

You can also install light dimmers to create a soft lighting experience - great for setting up the mood and using less electricity.

#4 - Make Sure You Have the Right Window Treatment

A lot of heat either escapes during the winter months or enters during the summer months through our windows. Having proper window treatments will help to be more energy-efficient.

There are many different window treatments to choose from.

Window shades are one of the most effective ways to save energy. You can even find dual layers of fabric to add more functionality.

If you desire a cozier or bold statement, drapes are another great energy-efficient option that adds style to your interior.

#5 - Add a Rug to Save Energy

A rug is not only a decorative element to make a room cozier. It can also be used as a tool to better insulate a room from both noises and heat loss. Avoid wasting heat through your floor by adding a rug or carpet.
