These two titles get used all the time interchangeably, but they represent very different skill sets.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines an interior designer as someone whose profession is to plan, research, coordinate, and manage the design and decoration of the inside of a building. That’s a much bigger job than picking paint colors.  To lay it out plainly, we have broken down bullet points of differentiators.

Interior Designer

• Education: A formal degree, training in CAD software, and a working knowledge of architecture basics
• Credentials: Industry exams and professional licensing, required in many regions

Interior Decorator

• Focus: Dressing an existing room with furniture, paint, textiles, and accessories
• Education: No formal degree or architectural training required
• Credentials: Built on portfolio work, style certifications, or design association membership

• Collaboration: Works directly with homeowners, furniture makers, and upholstery shops

So Why Do You Also Need an Architect?

If a project involves structural changes, that’s where an architect comes in.

An architect plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings and spaces. They’re the lead coordinator who turns your ideas into something safe, functional, and legal. Architects manage the entire lifecycle of a project, balancing style with cost, safety codes, and structural integrity. Their job is to protect the safety and soundness of the build. This is a fundamentally different skill set than what an interior designer brings to the table.
