The Collected Craftsman
This home already had a lot going for it: strong craftsman bones, generous windows, natural light, and a calming neutral palette. What it lacked was personality. The clients are creative, edgy, and deeply interesting, but the space didn’t yet reflect them.
Rather than reinventing the home, the design built on its existing strengths. The layout remained intact, with no walls moved. Instead, the transformation focused on thoughtful details. Tailored millwork added structure and intention, while updated hardware, two-toned cabinetry, and new surfaces introduced a more modern feel. Art deco influences layered throughout brought character and edge without making the spaces feel overly formal.
A key focus was the kitchen. Ken, a former chef, prioritized upgrading to a larger professional range, but replacing the existing maple cabinetry wasn’t practical. Instead of trying to match the original finish, the team reworked the cabinet layout to fit the new range and introduced a complementary second cabinet tone around it. The solution avoided a difficult refinishing process while giving the range a stronger visual presence and creating a more dynamic, personalized kitchen.
